HEAR WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
“This is our 2nd year at this school and we absolutely love it. The teachers are amazing! If you are a person looking to get your child immersed in the German language this is a great place to start or for families that already speak German, like our family, we highly recommend!”
Mother of Three PKS children
We are in our third week at Portland Kinderschule and couldn’t be happier. We’ve felt very welcomed by the teachers and the other parents. The onboarding process was smooth and the first few weeks have gone without a hitch. Thanks for having us, and we look forward to being part of this community!
Small class size, very good learning environment, caring teachers, excellent adult:child ratio. Children are thriving in this environment and developing very well. The classroom is very spacious, and a large outside area with playground is attached. Plus, unlike at some other German schools, the majority of families speak at least some German at home (some also speak a lot), which is very beneficial to everyone in the classroom for German language development.
We lived for 10 years in a small rural village on the north boundary of the Black Forest in Swabia, Germany. Three of our four children were able to visit the Kindergarten there. They came home every day with a song on their lips. The teachers were delightful, they had a great program. When we left there in 1986 to resettle in New York, we searched and searched for something comparable. Now at last, 30 years later, we have encountered a GEM of a German preschool in Portland which is benefiting two of our grandchildren. Excellent facility with large attached fenced playground, child appropriate achievement and play program, TERRIFIC teachers, convenient location, focus on socialization, and the secret ingredient – parental engagement of the first order. While what the school offers is PRICELESS, the actual monthly charges are surprisingly low. We are SO grateful, after all these years, to find such a great organization. . .
I should add that the parental engagement includes acting as Helper in the classroom for one day every two weeks for each child enrolled. So the parents come to know the other parents and all the children. And the children often come back after they have graduated [or even moved away!] to experience their friends and the class.
Portland Kinderschule offers an affordable option to exposing our children to German language and culture. We really appreciate the small child/teacher ratio and the relationships that are formed in the classroom. The co-op model means that we are actively involved, which also gives us a great chance to get to know other families and build community!

Our family is one of the few families at Portland Kinderschule without a German speaker in the home. The first year I watched my twins’ ability to understand German, and knowledge of key vocabulary words increase dramatically. This year, I have been amazed to see them grow even further in their knowledge of the language. They use their German willingly in class, and are able create full sentences. I even catch them speaking German to each other at home sometimes. This has been a truly wonderful preschool experience.”
We’ve had two children attend PKS and have been so impressed with the stellar education they’ve received. Our kids have not only learned German, they have learned to be self-sufficient, make good decisions, treat others with kindness, listen, and follow directions.
PKS has played a vital role in raising our children, due in no small part to the excellent and caring teachers who strive each day to create a caring and creative environment for all of the students. We plan on being part of this wonderful community for years to come.”
